Infrastructure
The Digital Image Catalog uses the following hardware
and software. This infrastructure is sufficient for prototyping
purposes, but heavy use or a much larger database will require
upgrading the software foundation.
The Records
- Item records are stored in one file per record consisting only of HTML
META Tags
using the Dublin Core
draft metadata standard.
- Each record was parsed from an SGML-encoded archival finding aid.
The prototype parsing system will need revision to produce appropriate
subject headings and more accurate designation of the photographer.
Software
- The search and maintenance functions are supported by several
Perl programs written by Roy Tennant.
The
closest online description of how the maintenance interface works is the
Librarians' Index to the Internet behind the scenes page. Although
the specifics are different, the general procedure is the same.
- The
indexing and searching is performed by SWISH-Enhanced, a free software program that has
been enhanced by the UC Berkeley Library to enable searching of HTML META
tag content.
