The tools section of our upcoming NY meeting will mainly be an open
discussion of the functionality everyone would like to see built into the
tools we develop to navigate and view the MOA2 documents. The main
questions to be addressed here are: who will be using the MOA2 documents
and what are their needs?

To serve as a starting point for discussions, I have attached a very
tentative list of high level use cases for the MOA2 document
navigator/viewer tool or tools we will be developing. I have assembled
this list from our discussions here at Berkeley, my own thoughts, and input
that Jerry McDonough has elicited from scholars and archivists here at
Berkeley. These use cases are intended as a preliminary attempt to outline
the desired functionality for the MOA2 document navigator/viewing tools and
as the initial step in an object-oriented design and analysis process that
will, with any luck, yield a reasonable class structure and architecture
for the tools and MOA2 documents. I took a preliminary stab at ranking the
use cases by relative importance (primary, secondary, optional); but made
no attempt to edit the list to fit within any particular time constraints.

We are looking forward to discussing the desired functionality of the MOA2
tools with all of the participants at the meeting in NY next week.

Preliminary high level use cases for MOA2 documents

User can:

1) Search archival document Collections in Union catalog (primary)
2) View and Navigate collection finding aids (primary-needs separate use
case list)
3) Select archival document or document collection for viewing (from
finding aid or from finding aid and Union Catalog record?) (primary)
4) Configure viewer: select default image resolution from available
resolutions (secondary)
5) Configure viewer: select active view(s) (table of contents view,
document image view,, document text view) Views can be active individually,
or simultaneously in any combination (primary)
6) View document table of contents ( document hierarchy) (primary)
7) Select entry point into document from document table of contents (primary)
8) View archival document image (could be page image or image of an
individual item such as a photograph) (primary)
9) Move sequentially through archival document images from given starting
point. (Sequence would be based on StructMap) (primary)
10) View image in other available format/resolution (primary)
11) Zoom in and out on image; view at 100% (secondary/optional)
12) View administrative metadata for image (primary)
13) Print image (primary)
14) View archival document text transcriptions. (primary)
15) Move sequentially through archival document text transcription units
from a given starting point (Sequence would be based on StructMap) (primary)
16) Search text in single transcription unit(secondary)
17) Print single transcription unit (primary)
18) Print all transcription units (primary)
19) View Administrative metadata for transcriptions (secondary)
20) View document image and any associated text transcription units side by
side (primary).
21) Move sequentially through side by side images/associated text
transcriptions from a given starting point (primary). Progress through
text and image views could be simultaneous or independent. (?)
22) Search text in all available transcription units (secondary)
23) Select entry point into document (image, transcription unit or both)
from list of text search results. (secondary)
24) Move through document (image view, text view or both) on basis of text
search results.
25) Search text identifying document divisions (that is, the text of the
LABEL attributes associated with divs in the StructMap.). Select entry
point into document (image, transcription unit or both) from list of search
results.
26) Select item image for viewing by clicking on portion of page image on
which it appears (secondary) (May just be another way of stating use case
11. Probably not supported by current DTD and Access file system, since
there is no sure way to distinguish page images from images of individual
items, such as photographs, that appear on that page)? (secondary/optional)
27) View stereographic images in 3D. (secondary/optional)
28) Search images in collection by descriptive and administrative metadata
elements such as photographer, date, etc. (secondary)
29) Sort images in collection by descriptive and administrative metadata
elements. (secondary)
30) Move through images searched and sorted by descriptive/administrative
metadata in order. May be viewed alone or together with any associated
text transcription units.
31) Submit rights request to rights owners (system facilitated rights
inquiries) (optional.)
32) Annotate document (secondary)
33) View document annotations made by others (secondary)
34) Assemble virtual collection of Archival Documents (optional)
35) Enhance/edit screen appearance of images (secondary/optional)
