Detail

A.00) Suffixes or prefixes used in field names throughout PhiloBiblon:

B.00) Fields found in every table:

B.10) Bibliographic fields keep track of the secondary bibliographical sources of a given record. B.20) Related MSS or editions are those primary sources listed in MS.ED which contain information concerning a given record elsewhere in PhiloBiblon. In this respect they function exactly like secondary bibliographic sources. B.30) Housekeeping fields record the dates a record was created and last changed, the initials of the persons who entered or changed the record (NOT those responsible for the data, who are listed in the bibliography fields), and the status of the record (i.e., whether it is known from a secondary source or from first-hand inspection). B.40) Subject fields serve as subject access points to a given record. They include dates or chronological periods, institutions (from INSTITUTIONS), and place names (from GEOGRAPHY) as well as traditional subject headings (from SUBJECT). B.50) Cross-reference fields relate the electronic data base to printed versions (currently [9/1/97] they only show the relation between records in the ANALYTIC table of BETA and the sequential item numbers in the third edition of the Bibliography of Old Spanish Texts, and between records in the ANALYTIC table of BITECA and the item numbers in the first edition of the Bibliography of Old Catalan Texts). B.60) The NOTES field is used for information which cannot conveniently fit in any of the other fields. Because they are common to every table, the fields listed above have been omitted from the following lists of table-specific fields.

C.00) Fields specific to a given table:

C.10) ANALYTIC -- The ANALYTIC table contains information concerning a given copy of a given text (e.g., title, incipit, and explicit in a specific MS or printed edition). So called because it provides an analysis of the contents of a manuscript or printed edition. C.15) BIBLIOGRAPHY -- The BIBLIOGRAPHY table contains all secondary bibliographic references which serve as the basis for information recorded in the other tables. In addition to the standard bibliographic information (e.g., author, title), it also identifies the type of bibliographic source (e.g., book, journal article, dissertation) as well as its format (e.g., printed, machine-readable file, photographic facsimile). C.20) BIOGRAPHY -- The BIOGRAPHY table contains biographical information (e.g., names, titles, institutional affiliations, personal relationships, occupation, dates and places of birth, residence, and death) of persons involved in the creation, dissemination, and reception of the texts cataloged. C.25) COPIES -- The COPIES table lists additional copies (e.g., location, shelfmark, condition, provenience) of a printed edition ) whose "master description" is given in MS.ED. C.30) GEOGRAPHY -- The GEOGRAPHY table contains geographical and toponymic information (type of toponym [e.g., geographical, political], latitude & longitude, alternate names) for all places mentioned in the other tables (e.g., places of publication in MS.ED, places of birth or death in BIOGRAPHY). C.35) INSTITUTIONS -- The INSTITUTIONS table contains information (alternate names, founders, date of foundation, location) concerning the institutions mentioned in the other tables. C.40) LIBRARY -- The LIBRARY table lists libraries which contain the primary and secondary source materials catalogued and offers basic information about them of interest to scholars (e.g., address, telephone nos., librarians, facilities, documents required, schedule). It includes both institutions and private owners. C.45) MS.ED -- The MS.ED table lists primary manuscript and printed sources (e.g., current location and shelfmark, date & place of production, scribe or printer, patron, publisher, material, size, foliation, watermarks, hand or font, provenience). C.50) ROLADEX -- The ROLADEX table (accessed through Main Menu PROCEDURES MAINTENANCE) lists modern scholars directly involved in preparing the data for a given bibliography. C.55) SUBJECT -- The SUBJECT table is a subject authority file which contains subject headings as well as alternate or rejected headings, related headings, and broader headings. C.60) UNIFORM.TITLE -- The UNIFORM.TITLE table contains normalized information about the text corpus catalogued (author, uniform title, variant titles, normalized incipit and explicit, date of composition or translation, persons associated [e.g., translator, patron, dedicatee, addressee], language, related texts).
