Themes: National Policies, National Institutions, National Collective Identities; [Statement:] "ARENA is a cross-disciplinary programme that includes a variety of theoretical approaches and frameworks with contemporary as well as historical perspectives. The aim, however, is to contribute to the development of better theories of Europeanisation on the basis of research groups organised around a limited number of theoretical frameworks of analysis. ARENA explicitly addresses the normative challenges posed by ongoing changes in the European political order. In addition to describing and explaining such changes, a central task is to assess their legitimacy particularly on the basis of democratic theory. ARENA promotes comparative research, in particular research oriented towards implications of European integration for the Norwegian state and for the Nordic and other small states in Europe."

Projects:

Projects:

Themes: [Goals:] Scientific and technological advances have yielded rich material benefits for some countries of the world. At the same time, they have brought serious problems, such as the depletion of natural resources, pollution of the environment, a widening gap between the developing nations and industrialized nations, and changing value systems that are adversely affecting ethical standards. These are problems for the future, and it is imperative that we now pursue research that will lead to solutions. The International Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS) has been established with this purpose in mind. [1999 research projects:] Neuroscience of Language, Cultural Bias of Science, The Possibility of Clinical Philosophy, The Promotion of Interdisciplinary and Inter-Project Cooperation in Materials Research, Ethical issues in Human Gene Analysis and Clinical Genetics, Investigation Research on the Next Generation Softwares; [past research projects:] Mathematical Approach to Fluctuations, The Structure of the Intercultural World, The Study of Happiness, "Cognition, Computation, and Consciousness," Translatability of Culture (technology and cultural fusion)

Projects:

Themes: "The research program of the period from 1986-1995 focused on historically and internationally comparative studies of the interaction between political-administrative intervention and societal self-organization in selected sectors 'close to the state' - namely in health care systems, organized research systems and large technical infrastructure systems, with a special emphasis on telecommunications. In the new program, the subjects of empirical research have changed in response to the growing importance of market interaction and international competition even in sectors that were formerly protected and tightly controlled by the authority of the nation state." [Research Themes:] 1) International and intersectoral comparisons of the functioning of national systems of governance and their response to changed external conditions; 2) The operation, performance and democratic legitimacy of transnational and supranational governance systems, with a special emphasis on the European Union; 3) The interplay between the institutions of multilevel governance systems
