OPEN ROAD

The Newsletter of the Emma Goldman Papers

Winter 2000: The Free Speech Issue

In 1906, when Emma Goldman launched her cultural and political anarchist magazine, she wanted to name it "The Open Road," not only to recall the spirit of Walt Whitman's poem, "Song of the Open Road," but to underscore her belief in the great possibilities of freedom. In deference to an existing publication with the same title, Goldman chose to name her magazine "Mother Earth." Now, almost a century later, the Emma Goldman Papers has taken the liberty of reclaiming the name for our occasional paper.
