Sue, I hope I am answering the question. I assume you mean in EAD.

We (UCB) have not been doing this yet. Like everyone else, have been
busily converting paper-based finding aids, which did not contain
controlled subject terminology. However, since EAD does allow for this,
and since this project is relatively small, as far as the number of
finding aids it will contain, we can certainly undertake this.

The obvious way to do this is using the <subject> element. Here is how I
think it should work.

[This example is basically ripped off from the EAD 1.0 tag library, p.
234, and if you don't have the tag library you should get it. It contains
tagged examples, which I find invaluable--please forgive my attempt to
show how I think this should work]

<archdesc level="collection" langmaterial="eng">
<did>...</did>
<controlaccess><head>Selected Search Terms</head>
[other possible elements and text]
<controlaccess><head>Subjects:</head>
<subject encodinganalog="610">Central Pacific Railroad
Company--Pictorial works</subject>
</controlaccess>
</controlaccess>
[other possible elements and text]
</archdesc>

I'd be interested to hear what you are doing at Penn State. I know that
others on this list also have thoughts on this, so sure, let's have a
discussion!
