Arthur McMurrin Hopkin
Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, Acting Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, and Acting Dean of the College of Engineering , UC Berkeley
1919-2000

"He enjoyed working with colleagues, students, staff and alumni and made himself readily available to them. He had a reputation for good judgment, fairness, and integrity. Among colleagues he was respected for his sense of commitment and responsibility, his feisty opinions, and his effective advocacy of strongly held ideas. When Mac saw something that needed doing he didn't pass the buck. He made a plan and pressed on with dogged determination."

Professor of Entomology, Chair of the Department of Entomology and Parasitology, and Dean of the College of Agriculture, UC Berkeley and Entomologist and Associate Director, Agricultural Experiment Station
1910-2000

"His primary legacy, which grew out of his Ph.D. thesis, is a nine-volume work, in part with J. A. Chemsak, The Cerambycidae of North America. His research depth and breadth are further evidenced by his collaborative work, with many researchers, on bees and their pollination. These activities are considered classics and models for future efforts."

Harmer E. Davis
Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Institute of Transportation Studies, UC Berkeley
1905-1998

"Throughout his career, Harmer was committed to what he liked to call 'people and ideas.' He never lost sight of the non-technological products and greater purpose of engineering education and research."

Harry Bolton Seed
Edward G. and John R. Cahill Professor of Civil Engineering and Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department, UC Berkeley
1922-1989

"Harry Bolton Seed was truly a giant of his generation, whose contributions have enriched his profession and society. For those who knew him well, he will be most remembered as a generous and compassionate gentleman, with wit, incisive insights, and wide-ranging interest in the world around him. No problem was too small to be analyzed and solved; every person was given time and consideration. He was truly a teacher in the highest sense of the word."

Charles Johnston Hitch
UC President (1968-1975)
Professor of Economics, UC Berkeley
1910-1995

"His monument . . . was a University still independent, still possessed of the highest academic capabilities, and still unruly enough to leave both the Left and the Right uncomfortable. In other words, a University worthy of the name."

Professor of Geology and Geophysics, UC Berkeley
1919-1994

"Most of all he loved to teach in the field; in that realm he was a master. He was always teaching those around him, whether at the University, the USGS, or in the community --not only students but also colleagues, youngsters in community programs, and adults in Extension courses."

Dean of Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, UC Berkeley
1903-1988

"His efforts in encouraging research, recruiting new, research-oriented faculty, and stimulating the modernization of the curriculum have made Berkeley one of the outstanding academic engineering centers in the world today. The University is tremendously indebted to Mike O'Brien for his vision and dedication in this accomplishment."

Professor of Education, UC Berkeley
1896-1987

"Mary always maintained that her life had been enriched by her research and teaching, but she was too modest to acknowledge that she played a critical role in shaping and guiding the field of developmental psychology."

University Professor of English, UC Berkeley
1911-1985

"Her success as a teacher of poetry is illustrated by a roll call of some of her most famous students, whose own genius, in the best cases, does not eclipse an affinity to her distinctive economy of style and subject."

Professor of Economics, UC Berkeley
1895-1984

"His method, also, was an uncanny ability to perceive at the very start what would be important in the future, and to see consequences where others saw nothing but an apparently temporary phenomenon of no current, let alone historical, importance."

Hans Albert Einstein
Professor of Hydraulic Engineering, UC Berkeley
1904-1973

"By students, friends, and colleagues, Hans Albert Einstein's name will be recalled with warmth throughout the world. He offered encouragement and patient assistance to his students, and through his contacts with students, teachers, and engineers, he had great influence on the scientific development of the hydraulics of sedimentation in foreign countries as well as in the United States. . . . One student observed, 'The picture of his well built and smiling figure striding across the Hydraulic Laboratory still hovers in my mind and before my eyes. We will always cherish those sweet memories.'"

Professor of Entomology and Chairman of the Division of Entomology and Parasitology, UC Berkeley and Entomologist, Agricultural Experiment Station
1884-1964

"Of all his accomplishments none was more pronounced than his teaching ability. . . . He was frequently known as the students' best friend. His lectures were well organized and outstanding because of the wealth of knowledge and experience he had at his disposal."

Frank Nugent Freeman
Professor of Education and Dean of the School of Education, UC Berkeley
1880-1961

"The well-known phrase 'a gentleman and a scholar'seems especially apt in describing the character and activities of Frank Nugent Freeman."

Professor of Geology and Mineralogy, UC Berkeley
1861-1952

"He found the unsolved problems of his new surroundings stimulating, and spent all the time available, either alone or with students, in the study of Coast Range geology. He was so wrapped up in his work that the first Mrs. Lawson, when asked what his religion was, said, 'He is a geologist.'"

Photograph by Horace D. Lyon, April, 1940. Courtesy of the Water Resources Center Archives, University of California. Joseph Nisbet LeConte
Professor of Mechanical Engineering, UC Berkeley
1870-1950

"LeConte's teaching was the heart of his life. His notes were constantly under revision, until he had a shelf of bound volumes representing the evolution of a single course. Every principle found application in illustrative examples and further problems. His skill in presentation gave clarity to theory and engineering practice."

Photograph courtesy of the Essig Museum of Entomology, UC Berkeley. Original photograph 7.8 inches wide, 10.4 inches high. Charles William Woodworth
Professor of Entomology and Chairman of the Department of Entomology, UC Berkeley
1865-1940

"He was more than an entomologist; he was a naturalist, a mathematician of note, a physicist, expert in the field of optics, and a distinguished inventor. He made notable contributions to the manufacture and use of many of our most important insecticides, particularly the arsenicals, lime-sulfur, oil emulsions, and cyanide as a fumigant, the latter in the control of citrus pests."
