 |
Maynard
A. Amerine
Professor of Viticulture and Enology, UC Davis
1911-1998
"Maynard Amerine was a world leader in developing sensory evaluation
and quality estimation techniques widely applied beyond the wine field." |
| |
|
 |
Herman
T. Spieth
Professor of Zoology, UC Davis
1905-1988
"Most of Spieth's lifelong research activities were evolutionary
in nature: systematics, behavior, especially mating behavior, and
evolutionary ecology. In his early work the organism of interest was
the mayfly (Ephemeroptera). He constructed the definitive systematics
of this organism while working out the basic ecology of many of the
species . . . His final years were spent studying the ecology of Drosophila
in the Blodgett Forest in the Sierras near Davis. " |
| |
|
 |
Oscar
William Schalm
Professor of Clinical Pathology, UC Davis
1909-1982
"Oscar Schalm, the distinguished scientist, was equally a distinguished
teacher. He exemplified the teacher-researcher who earned his colors
from having been the authority in this field . . . He had a gift for
inducing students to apply themselves in his classroom and laboratories
for it was evident to them that he applied himself for their sake
even more." |
| |
|
 |
Tracy
I. Storer
Professor of Zoology, UC Davis
1889-1973
"Tracy had a meticulous and active intellect. Not only was he
a 'walking encyclopedia' on zoology, mammalogy, natural history, photography,
and electronics, but his system of filing and storage enabled him
to find any item in these categories quite promptly. For example,
the color plates of birds in Animal Life in the Yosemite (1926)
were pulled from a cabinet to be used in Natural History of the
Sierra Nevada (1968). This precise competence was extended into
his textbooks of zoology, which have been translated into a number
of foreign languages." |
| |
|
 |
Louis
Kimball Mann
Professor of Vegetable Crops, Experiment Station Oleculturist, UC
Davis
1915-1964
"The scholarly achievements of Louis Mann stand as a permanent
contribution to the world; and his way of life and his generous feelings
for all people have deeply touched his students and colleagues and
many friends." |
| |
|
 |
John
Gilbert Baird Castor
Associate Professor of Viticulture and Enology, UC Davis
1909-1958
"Dr. Castor's research was broadly conceived and intensively
and meticulously pursued. The tragedy is that he was not spared to
bring to fruition the many lines of investigation which he still had
under way." |
