John
Estes
Professor of Geography, UC Santa Barbara
1939-2001
"His 250 publications ranged from his work on the detection,
identification and monitoring of marine oil spills, to the analysis
of agricultural crop identification, water demand determination and
urban expansion, to the preservation of biological diversity and monitoring
environmental pollution, to the development of advanced image analysis
procedures and the integration of remote sensing, information systems
and expert systems." |
| |
|
 |
Robert G. Egan
Professor of Dramatic Art, UC Santa Barbara
1945-2000
"From the start, he expanded his directing opportunities to include
the Los Angeles theatre arena. In September 1979, he directed Robert
Shaw's The Man in the Glass Booth at the Theatre Exchange in Los Angeles,
casting professional actor, Al Ruscio, in the title role. His professional
and personal relationship with Al lasted throughout his lifetime,
leading them both to the monumental, widely acclaimed Theatre Artists
Group production of King Lear in 1984 at UCSB." |
| |
|
 |
Frank McConnell
Professor of English, UC Santa Barbara
1942-1999
"He came first to UCSB to teach summer school in 1981, then joined
the department as a full professor in 1982. Over the next 16 years
he gave a wide range of courses in the Romantics, modern and contemporary
American fiction, narrative, science fiction, and Shakespeare, most
of them large lectures. Frank may have reached his largest audience
in a series of columns he wrote for the national lay Catholic journal,
Commonweal . . . over fifteen years, ranged widely over his favorite
subjects, film, television, jazz, and books." |
| |
|
 |
C. Warren Hollister
Professor of History, UC Santa Barbara
1930-1997
"A specialist in the institutions of post-Norman Conquest England,
he became internationally famous for studies that emphasized the interrelationship
of England and the Norman realm in Western France--two fields that
previously had been treated as separate subjects. His book, Anglo-Saxon
Military Institutions On the Eve of the Norman Conquest, published
by Oxford in 1962, won the Triennial Book Prize of the Conference
on British Studies and skyrocketed him to the top of the profession." |
| |
|
 |
Robert Henry Billigmeier
Professor of Sociology, UC Santa Barbara
1917-1996
"Bob was interested in the evolution of their linguistic and
cultural distinctiveness, and in 1979 published A Crisis in Swiss
Pluralism. The book provided an important and extensive analysis
of a large number of geographic, cultural, economic, and linguistic
factors that have shaped the history of the Raeto-Romansh over the
past thousand years." |
|
|
 |
Katherine
Esau
Professor of Botany, UC Santa Barbara
1898-1996
"Esau was especially well known for her beautifully written and
comprehensive textbooks. Her first book, Plant Anatomy, was
published in 1953, and it became a classic almost immediately. The
book was and still is fondly called the "bible" for structural
botanists." |
| |
|
 |
David
S. Gebhard
Professor of History of Art and Architecture, UC Santa Barbara
1927-1996
". . . [his range extended] from English Arts and Crafts to California
Spanish revival, from famous European modernists to almost-forgotten
women architects. His research and publications were instrumental
in creating a field, the study of regional vernacular architecture
in America as expressed by professional architects, a field which
has become increasingly popular in our post-modern era." |
| |
|
 |
Wolfram F. Hanrieder
Professor of Political Science, UC Santa Barbara
1931-1995
". . . his magisterial Germany, American, Europe: Forty Years
of German Foreign Policy, [was] published in 1989 and again in 1991.
As with his previous works, this one manifested Wolfram's unique ability
to contribute in two arenas of discourse on international relations,
the world of theoretical scholarship and the world of elite policy
analysis and policy-making. He lectured widely in this country and
abroad, and held numerous teaching appointments. . ." |
|
|
 |
Robert
L. Kelley
Professor of History, UC Santa Barbara
1925-1993
"The nation, Bob Kelley was convinced, needed more rather
t
less historical expertise, and careers awaited those who were
trained in both sound historical methodology and the emerging contours
of professional development in museums, archives, historical societies,
preservation, and governmental policy-making. Animated by this vision,
he created at UCSB a pioneering undergraduate and graduate program
in public history."
|
|
|
 |
Karl
Geiringer
Professor of Music, UC Santa Barbara
1899-1989
"Karl's prolific scholarly output, when viewed in its totality,
is remarkable for its great scope and depth. His writings and editions
span practically the complete range of music history and all carry
the mark of a discipline he must have possessed as a student and an
excellence we know he had as a teacher." |
|
|
 |
Marvin
Mudrick
Professor of English and Provost of the College of Creative Studies,
UC Santa Barbara
1921-1986
"Like the voices of his favorite authors, the voice in his writing
reproduces his own living voice in an almost uncanny way. That voice
is cantankerous, loving, aggressive, spiteful, charming; it abounds
with energy and fierce humor. His very funny wordplay remains, and
his gift for parody as well as his enormous love for, and need for
the arts, as though his own life has depended on them." |
|
|
 |
Herbert
P. Broida
Professor of Physics, UC Santa Barbara
1920-1978
"Herb Broida was a man of action as well as a scholar. He liked
to see things done and knew how to get them done. In his fourteen
years at UCSB he influenced nearly every aspect of the physics department's
growth." |
