Vernon I. Cheadle
Chancellor (1962-1977), UC Santa Barbara, and Professor of Biological Sciences, UC Davis
1910-1995

"Vernon Cheadle's mission was to transform a small, mostly undergraduate college into a first-class general campus of the University of California. He succeeded admirably in carrying out his mission: Vernon Cheadle became the architect and builder of this campus."

Professor of Education and Acting Provost (1946-1950) and Provost (1950-1955), UC Santa Barbara; Professor of Education, UC Los Angeles
1888-1981
"He was widely known as a university educator and for his research in education and psychology, in which fields he authored six books . . . He strongly supported the development of an excellent college library, and in so doing, he laid the foundation for the present outstanding University library at Santa Barbara."

Provost (1944-1946), UC Santa Barbara
1881-1964
"President Phelps' leadership brought the college through a series of steps from an institution devoted only to a limited curriculum of teacher training to a broad program of general education and a growing emphasis on the liberal arts. As Chancellor Cheadle stated: 'President Phelps was faced with extreme handicaps hampering the development of the former Santa Barbara State College, but it was his dedication to an educational ideal and the ability to convey these ideals to public officials which brought the institution to its high level of achievement.'"
