Margaret Peterson Art Exhibit

Margaret Peterson, a member of the faculty of the Art Department at UC Berkeley, was one of those who refused to sign the loyalty oath and left the University. Her departure also drew many promising art students away from Berkeley. After the oath Peterson lived in both Italy and the Pacific Northwest, and developed a style based in part on the imagery of Native American peoples of the Pacific Coast. She also kept in touch with other non-signers of the oath, sending them hand-painted holiday cards, each of which was an individual work of art.

This exhibit of her work includes eight paintings and two smaller works on paper. It is the first exhibit of several pieces of her work since the 1970s. The exhibit is presented by the Townsend Center for the Humanities, with paintings on loan from both the Berkeley Art Museum, University of California, and a private collector.

The exhibit, in the lobby of the Townsend Center, 220 Stephens Hall, on the Berkeley campus, will continue until October 20. Hours are weekdays 8:00 AM to noon and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. For details of handicapped access, please call the Townsend Center at 643-9670.
