George Holmes Howison established the department of philosophy in 1884, when he was appointed the Mills Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy and Civil Polity, the University's first endowed chair. He shaped the discipline of philosophy at Berkeley through the first two decades of the twentieth century.
