The
year 1899 pushed the University of California into the
twentieth century in more ways than just on the calendar:
it laid the groundwork for the campus we recognize today,
physically as well as academically.
Two events of 1899 that brought about a major change
were the arrival of Benjamin Ide Wheeler as president
and the completion of the Phoebe Hearst Architectural
Competition for the University of California.
