student in her lodgings. University-run housing was
not provided for students at the end of the nineteenth
century. Many students lived in a scattering of fraternities
and sororities, or at home in Berkeley or in nearby
communities with their families. A system of privately
operated boarding and rooming houses near campus also
provided housing for students, particularly women.
