Oceanography
The Department of Oceanography was formally
established in 1960, but the Scripps Institution of Oceanography
first provided a graduate curriculum in oceanography in the 1920's.
Students in this curriculum completed advanced course work and
research at Scripps for master's and doctoral degrees awarded
at Berkeley or Los Angeles. Until 1946, no more than five to ten
students were in residence each year on the La Jolla campus.
In 1946, a more complete program
was initiated under the leadership of the institution's director,
Harold U. Sverdrup, and the student enrollment more than doubled.
The institution began to expand rapidly in research and instruction
and to undertake more of the responsibilities of a graduate department
in oceanography under the supervision of the Graduate Division
at Los Angeles. Between 1946 and 1960, 53 doctoral degrees were
granted to candidates in oceanography.
After its formal establishment, the department
continued to emphasize studies designed to reveal the interdependence
of the biological, chemical, geological, and physical processes
operating in the oceans. Entering students were required to have
a baccalaureate degree in one of the physical or biological sciences
and to continue their studies in basic science at the graduate
level. At the same time they were expected to broaden their experience
by the study of all aspects of oceanography. The number of students
increased from 57 in 1960 to 72 in 1965 and 18 doctoral degrees
were granted during this period.
By the mid-1960's the department had a faculty
of 16 and some members of the Scripps research staff served as
lecturers. All of the faculty held appointments in the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography, and some had additional appointments
in other units of the San Diego campus, such as the Institute
of Marine Resources and the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary
Physics. source
