Fresno, UCSF
Before UCSF Fresno's founding in 1975, the San Joaquin Valley was plagued by a shortage of physicians and limited continuing professional education. In 1970, a report by the Carnegie Commission of Higher Education and the Nation's Health found that Fresno would be a desirable place for a "Health Science Center." Under the leadership of Milo E. Rowell, a Fresno Attorney, the community founded the San Joaquin Valley Health Consortium, which is dedicated to ensuring better health care in the valley. With aid from the city and county of Fresno, the Consortium published a report on the feasibility of such a center. The report was persuasive. The University of California decided to place a permanent clinical branch in the San Joaquin Valley, and assigned responsibility to UCSF. The new center received financial support from the California State Legislature, and grants totally more than $13 million from the Veterans Administration. source
