Pacific Rim Research Program
Piñon Flat Observatory, Cecil and Ida Green

Pacific Rim Research Program
The Pacific Rim Research Program began funding research in 1986 as a Multicampus Research Unit. It was a program that valued interdisciplinary, cross-regional, cross-cultural, and comparative research on issues relevant to countries bordering the Pacific Ocean, including Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific Islands. By 2001, the program was providing close to $800,000 a year in grants and had funded over 470 projects for over 275 UC faculty and over 300 scholars from all around the Pacific Rim region. source

Piñon Flat Observatory, Cecil and Ida Green
Work began at the Piñon Flat site in 1970, under the administration of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at UC San Diego. It is positioned between the two most active faults in the Southern California area of the Pacific/North American plate boundary, and is an ideal site because many seismic devices require a large flat area not covered with alluvium, or river sediment. It serves investigators throughout the world as a test site for new instruments. Due to the large amount of "slip," or lag between the tectonic plates and the surface, stored in the San Andreas fault (as much as 10 meters), a large earthquake is expected to occur between 2004 and 2034. source
