Ex officio Regent as lt. gov., Feb., 1875-Dec., 1875, as
gov., Dec., 1875-80. Education: grad. 1848, Marietta Coll.
Career: taught three years in Port Gibson, Mass.; tutor at
Marietta Coll.; Oregon law practice; came to Cal., 1856, mined,
was lumberman; editor of Yreka Union; assemblyman from Siskiyou
county, 1862-64; state senator, 1874. S.F. law practice, 1880-86.
