Biographies
Lansing,
Sherry L, b. July 31, 1944, Chicago,
Ill. Appointed as Regent in March 1999 by Governor
Davis to a term expiring in 2010. She currently serves as Vice Chairman
of The Regents. Committee memberships (2000-01): Educational
Policy, Health Services. Education: Ms. Lansing holds a bachelor
of science degree from Northwestern University. Career: Sherry
Lansing is the Chair and CEO of Paramount Pictures, a position she
has held since 1992. Prior to that, she headed her own production
company. She has taught high school math and English in Los Angeles.
She sits on the board of directors of Teach for America and the
American Film Institute. She has served on the board of trustees
of Scripps College, the board of Independent Colleges of Southern
California, the board of the UCLA Foundation, and the executive
committee of the Dean's advisory board of the UCLA School of Theatre,
Film and Television.
La Rue,
Hugh McElroy, b. Aug. 12, 1830, Elizabethtown, Ky.; d. Dec.

came to Cal., 1849; miner, trader, blacksmith, wagon maker, 1850;

Lawrence,
John H., b. Jan. 7, 1904, Canton, S.D., d. Sept 7, 1991.
Appointed by Governor Reagan, 1970-83. Education:
University of South Dakota, 1926; M.D., 1930, Harvard University.
Career: Conducted pioneer research in using artificial radiation
in treating cancer patients; dir. of the Donner Laboratory at Berkeley
until appointment as Regent; had been with Donner Lab since its
beginnings in 1935; brother of Ernest O. Lawrence.
Leach,
Howard H., b. June 19, 1930, Salinas, Calif. Appointed
by governor Deukmejian, 1990-2001. Committees: Health Services,
1999-2000; Audit, 2000; Investments, 2000-01; Chairman, Oversight
of the Dept. of Energy, 2000-01; Chairman of the Board, 1993-95.
Education: B.S. Economics, 1952, Yale University. Career:
President or Chairman and major stockholder in several food growing
and shipping companies, including Cypress Farms, Royal Packing Co.,
American Farms, Inc.; named Ambassador to France by President George
W. Bush in 2001, after his term as Regent expired.

Lee,
David S, b. June 23, 1937, China. Appointed by Governor
Wilson as Regent, 1994-2006. Committee memberships (2000-01):
Audit, Finance, Health Services (Vice Chair). Education:
Born in China, Mr. Lee holds an honorary doctorate of engineering
and a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from
Montana State University and a master's degree in the same field
from North Dakota State University. Career: David S. Lee
is Chairman of the Board of Communications Corporation and Cortelco.
Currently Mr. Lee is a member of the boards of directors of ACT
Manufacturing, ESS Technology, Linear Technology Corporation, Accela,
Daily Wellness Co., Telemax Communications, Pacific International
Center for High Technology Research and the California Chamber of
Commerce, and is Honorary President of Asian Culture Teachings.
He was an advisor to Presidents Bush and Clinton on the Advisory
Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiation (Office of the U.S. Trade
Representative/Executive Office of the President) and to former
Governor Wilson through the California Economic Development Corporation
and the council on California Competitiveness. Mr. Lee has served
on the Board of Governors for California Community Colleges.
