Press Release
April 29, 1999

The Editorial Board of the Chronicle of the University of California is pleased to announce the publication of volume 1, number 2, devoted to women at the University of California. In its twenty-six articles we include women who have added surface color and intellectual depth to the university, from the rawest coed to the famous scientist, to suffragettes and YWCA officers, faculty members, faculty wives, and athletes, singers, dancers, poets, and the inevitable wealthy donors. Some received honorary degrees and some never received tenure. There are 184 pages and 140 pictures illustrating not a story of "everywoman," but a sampling from every era and every category. We hope as entertaining as enlightening.

Our first issue, "Disasters at Cal," was called by James Clark, Director of the UC Press, "one of the most handsomely produced journals I have seen in some time and the content is equally impressive."
